What’s special about Brickfields

Brickfields, located near Bangsar in Kuala Lumpur, is officially recognized as “Little India” in Malaysia. This vibrant district has been home to many Indian residents for years, creating a deep sense of community and tradition. What makes Brickfields truly special is its blend of cultural and religious landmarks, much like in India. The area is dotted with temples, mosques, churches, and shrines, offering a rich spiritual experience.

One notable site is the Thean Hou Temple, located near Jalan Syed, which is one of the oldest and most revered temples in Southeast Asia. Another key attraction is the world-famous Vivekananda Ashram on Jalan Tun Sambanthan, a place of great historical significance.

Brickfields is also rapidly becoming a property hotspot, thanks to its proximity to KL Sentral, Kuala Lumpur’s major transport hub, making it an ideal location for both residents and visitors.

Brickfields History

Over 150 years ago, Brickfields was a small town filled with wooden houses and thatched roofs. However, in 1880, a massive fire engulfed the area, destroying much of the town. In the aftermath, all new buildings were constructed using bricks and tiles, marking a significant shift in the town’s architecture. A large brickyard, established by the entrepreneur Yap Ah Loy, played a key role in producing the materials needed to build early Malaysia. Later, the British constructed the Malayan Railways in the area, bringing in laborers from India and Sri Lanka to work on the project. Many of these workers settled in the region, and their descendants continue to call Malaysia home today. This mix of historical events helped shape Brickfields into the culturally rich district it is today, known as Little India.

Little India

Brickfields means something different to everyone who visits. For some, it represents a vibrant hub of Indian culture, while for others, it’s a fascinating collection of various places of worship. As a well-known tourist destination, it attracts travelers from around the world, and its streets are also home to bustling massage centers, giving the area its unique character. Originally, Kuala Lumpur’s Little India was located on Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman, but in 2009, it was officially moved to Brickfields.

The nearby markets along Jalan Tun Sambanthan offer an explosion of sights, smells, and tastes reminiscent of India. Walking through the streets, you’ll see locals dressed in traditional sarees, adorned with jewelry, and enjoying meals served on banana leaves.
